While your captain has enjoyed some modest success at our beloved game of squash, it is at the venerable art of Gamesmanship that he truly excels. Gamesmanship, that close cousin of “one-upmanship,” is an art form, which your captain has honed and perfected over the course of many long years. Simply put, Gamesmanship is the art of winning while losing. It is the art of gaining psychological advantage over one’s opponent in a manner that is often so subtle that the hapless opponent never quite understands why he is feeling so off-balance.

Night Crowd

Captain Backhand has given his opinion on the merits of the lunch time squash crowd, and while his words are not totally lacking in charm and humor, I feel compelled to offer a rebuttal on behalf of the evening crowd.

Captain Backhand pooh-poohs the upstairs post-game socializing, dismissing it under the heading of ‘beer’. Of course he does, because it is only possible in the evening

The Lunch Crowd

The noble art of squash is a rather superior game, I’m sure you’ll agree, and those who play, with one or two exceptions, (Jonathan Power, get a hair cut!) represent the very best that our society has to offer. Those of us who play at lunchtime have a tendency to view ourselves as being part of a rather more exclusive club. A club within a club, you might say. It’s nothing formal, just an unspoken recognition between us lunchtime chaps that we share a responsibility to uphold the very finest values of the game, both on and off the court.
